Press Release: Our Response to the Earthquake in Turkey

UK charity to distribute emergency packs in Izmir after deadly earthquake hits Turkey

On Friday 20th October, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean Sea, killing 111 people in Turkey and injuring over 1035. Over 1400 aftershocks have been felt so far across the country, some being over magnitude 4.0. Dozens of buildings have been damaged, leaving many homeless, and emergency workers are still searching for survivors in the rubble, with the death toll expected to rise.

UK charity Muslim Hands has started distributing emergency packs to support 1400 people affected by the earthquake in Izmir, as part of its first phase response. The emergency packs consist of essential items such as food, water, and blankets, which will be distributed to vulnerable individuals across three districts Bayrakli, Seferihisar, and Bornova over the next 7 days. Over 10,000 people have been affected by the earthquake in Izmir, which has left many homeless, forced to spend their nights outside in makeshift tents as they face the bitter cold. Families including children are vulnerable and face difficulties accessing food and drinking water.

For 8 years Muslim Hands has been actively working on the ground in Turkey supporting the country’s 1.7 million refugees with education, food, and winter essentials, which include those that have fled war-torn Syria. Basel Alkhder, Muslim Hands Emergency Lead Programmes, said:

'The earthquake in Izmir has truly devastated so many families. Loved ones have either been killed, injured, and homes have been destroyed. Muslim Hands has already started distributing essential items such as blankets and food. The distribution is part of our first phase response and will last 7 days. We hope to support the people in this region for the long haul, but this is only possible with your generous donations. With the bitter winter months fast approaching it is vital for us to act now'.
