The Risk Officer will play a key role in supporting the Director of Finance and Services in embedding a strong risk management culture across Muslim Hands. The role will ensure that the organisation’s risk management framework is effective, relevant, and consistently applied to safeguard assets, reputation, and beneficiaries. The postholder will monitor and report on risks across departments — including finance, operations, IT, procurement, and programme delivery — providing assurance that internal controls and compliance mechanisms are robust and responsive to emerging challenges.

Position Summary

Risk Identification and Assessment

  • Maintain and regularly update the organisation-wide risk register in collaboration with department heads.
  • Identify, assess, and document operational, financial, compliance, and strategic risks across departments.
  • Analyse internal and external factors that may impact the organisation’s ability to achieve its objectives.

Risk Monitoring and Reporting

  • Monitor risk mitigation plans and track progress against agreed actions.
  • Prepare quarterly risk reports for the Director of Finance and Services and the Audit & Risk Committee.
  • Highlight significant or emerging risks that require senior management attention.
  • Support management in implementing effective controls and corrective actions.

Risk Management Framework and Policies

  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the risk management framework.
  • Ensure risk management practices align with Charity Commission guidance, internal policies, and international best practice.
  • Contribute to policy reviews, risk appetite statements, and business continuity planning.

Compliance and Internal Controls

  • Collaborate with the finance, IT, procurement, and operations teams to ensure compliance with internal controls.
  • Conduct compliance checks and assist in internal audit preparation.
  • Monitor adherence to donor requirements and regulatory obligations.
  • Assist in fraud prevention initiatives and whistleblowing procedures.

Key Deliverables / KPIs

  • Quarterly risk register updates submitted to the Director of Finance and Services.
  • Quarterly risk reports and dashboards prepared for the Audit & Risk Committee.
  • Completion of annual review of risk management framework and related policies.
  • Timely follow-up and closure of agreed risk mitigation actions within specified deadlines.
  • Evidence of improved risk awareness and reporting across departments.

Person Specification

  • Essential:
  • Degree in Risk Management, Accounting, Finance, Law, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in risk management, internal audit, or compliance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret complex information and communicate it clearly to non-specialists.
  • Strong organisational and report-writing skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and risk tracking tools (e.g. Power BI, SharePoint).
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience working in an INGO/ charity environment or Multi National Corporation.
  • Familiarity with Charity Commission guidance, UK law, Economics,
  • Professional qualification or evidence of working towards it (ACCA, CIMA, CIA, or equivalent) desirable.
  • Understanding of international operations, compliance, and charities.
