UK charity Muslim Hands Gaza Famine Statement

Muslim Hands would like to take this opportunity to assure our donors that, despite the many obstacles around access, your donations to Gaza are getting in. With the help of our UN partners, since October 2023, over 5 million hot meals and over 10,000 food parcels have been distributed as well as over 880,000 meta-tonnes of flour, which have been provided to bread bakeries and directly to families across the Gaza Strip.
Muslim Hands donors have also been providing direct cash assistance. This has been extended to children with disabilities and their families in Gaza to restore hope and dignity. According to the UN, at least 21,000 children in Gaza have been disabled since the war began and around 40,500 children have suffered new war-related injuries.
We are also paying the salaries of health workers, including doctors, midwives and pharmacists who are working tirelessly, often in makeshift conditions, to provide life-saving care to patients. Hospitals, already operating under severe pressure before the war, now face unprecedented challenges. According to WHO, 94% of hospitals in Gaza are either damaged or destroyed and of the regions 36 hospitals only 17 are still partially operational, though they are overwhelmed, under-resourced, and facing severe shortages of medical supplies and personnel. These salaries will ensure that medical staff are available so that their vital work continues to save lives.
As of 15th August 2025, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification [IPC] confirmed famine in Gaza Governate, which is projected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September. According to IPC this is the first confirmed famine in the Middle East and one-third of Gaza’s population will face famine by late September. A large portion of those impacted are the most vulnerable, including children under five and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The famine is not a natural tragedy. It is manmade; the direct result of humanitarian aid remaining severely constrained, with aid flows slowed by inspections, access denials and logistical bottlenecks. Quantities remain far below what would be required to avert widespread starvation in the Gaza Strip. Only an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access can provide the level of food and other essential supplies people desperately need.
Since 7th October 2023, 63,459 Palestinians have been killed and over 160,000 have been wounded, many of those women and children. Since the end of the ceasefire in March, more than one in three Palestinians has been forcibly displaced again. Military operations have escalated with intensified attacks in the north of Gaza as well as displacement orders for Palestinians in Gaza City. The military operations in Gaza city will have a horrific humanitarian impact on Palestinians already exhausted malnourished, bereaved, displaced and deprived of basics needed for survival.
Muslim Hands has been active in Gaza since 2007, and we remain committed to the Palestinian people. We extend our warmest gratitude to our supporters for their continuous donations, currently exceeding over £16.5 million and providing essential relief in a multitude of areas. We are also grateful to our partners on the ground, who have had to work in immensely difficult conditions, risking their lives to ensure that relief reaches the population in Gaza.
Yasrab Shah, Muslim Hands Fundraising Director said; ‘We pledge our commitment to continue facilitating the people of Gaza. With our chosen UN partners, our efforts on the ground is to help save lives and to stop this preventable famine, which is gripping Gaza. We urge our supporters to keep their donations coming, your donations are a real lifeline and are the difference between life and death.’
