Refugee Camp, Salzburg, Austria

Background Information

As hundreds of thousands of people are forced to flee the conflict zones of Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, Europe is witnessing a refugee crisis, the likes of which has not been seen in this part of the world since the second world war.

Building on the work we have already been carrying out in the Middle East and other war-torn parts of the world, Muslim Hands is working on several fronts to provide support to refugees travelling through Europe.

Over 2,500 people have died while trying to cross the Mediterranean in 2015 and over 60% of migrants travelling to Europe in the past year are in fact refugees fleeing from conflict zones, resulting in the largest mass movement since World War 2.

Refugee Camp in Salzburg, Austria

The Muslim Hands project in Salzburg has so far provided over 180,000 hot meals to refugees since Friday 16th October 2015. The Austrian government have granted access to Muslim Hands to exclusively provide lunch and dinner at the refugee camp.

The camp itself is the final stop for refugees before moving on to the German border, 6km away. Predominantly, the refugees are originally from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, with many others from developing countries such as Sudan, Nepal, Somalia and Bangladesh.

This trip will give you the opportunity to help prepare, cook and serve hot meals to the refugees. You will also be spending time with refugees, hearing their stories and bringing a smile to children's faces by distributing toys, balloons and colouring books.
