Motherkind clinic saved Omar's life

Until she reached the Motherkind Clinic in Afghanistan, Maria had no idea a deadly parasite was slowly draining the life of her 7-month-old son, Omar. Weighing just 4kg, he was dangerously underweight, and living on only $3 a day left Maria with little hope of treatment.

At the clinic, doctors began nutritional therapy with protein peanut paste, helping Omar gain weight. Further tests later revealed a parasitic infection, which was treated with specialised care.

Now weighing a healthier 7kg, Omar is on the path to recovery, and Maria’s fears have eased. Her story reflects the reality for thousands of mothers in crisis zones, where Motherkind clinics provide a vital lifeline when families have nowhere else to turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the aim of your health projects?

Our health programmes aim to ensure that people living with poverty, in remote areas and in crisis zones can access essential, life-saving healthcare. We focus on preventing avoidable illness, supporting safe childbirth, restoring sight, and maintaining medical services in the most fragile and conflict-affected settings.

What types of healthcare do you provide?

Our support varies by location but includes maternal and newborn care, cataract surgeries through eye camps, primary healthcare services, emergency medical support and funding for doctors, nurses, and midwives working in crisis and war-affected areas.

How do your maternity care programmes help mothers and babies?

We support safe pregnancies and deliveries by funding skilled birth attendants, essential medical equipment, antenatal and postnatal care and community outreach programmes. This helps reduce preventable deaths and complications for both mothers and babies.

What are cataract eye camps?

Cataract eye camps are temporary clinics set up in communities where access to eye care is limited. They provide free or low-cost eye examinations and cataract surgeries, restoring sight and enabling people to return to work, education and daily life.
