Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. The root meaning of the word Zakat is to purify. It is a compulsory charity for eligible Muslims, due once each lunar year. The total value of Zakat is 2.5% on savings and assets that meet or exceeds the Nisab (a certain value of gold and silver).
Zakat is designed to purify wealth and support the most vulnerable members of the Muslim community. When you give Zakat, you fulfil a spiritual duty and contribute to a more just, caring society.
Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth that makes you eligible to pay Zakat. It is often defined as the value equivalent to 87.48 g of gold, or 612.36 g of silver. When your savings stay at or above the Nisab amount for one full lunar year, you must pay your Zakat.
In modern times, the Nisab is calculated according to current market prices. This ensures that your Zakat obligation reflects real economic value and remains fair and accessible to all.
Gold Nisab £9,691.91
Silver Nisab £1,169.61
Just weeks before Jameer’s 13th birthday, his life changed forever. When his father passed away, the family lost not only a beloved parent, but their only source of income. Grief was quickly followed by uncertainty, as Jameer and his three siblings faced the risk of leaving school to survive.
Through orphan sponsorship, Jameer was able to stay in school. Instead of being forced into work, he can now focus on learning, growing, and planning for the future. School is more than just an nstitution of learning. It's a safe haven of stability and nurture — and a reminder that he is not alone.
Thanks to your Zakat, children like Jameer are protected from poverty and child labour, and given the chance to build a brighter tomorrow.
