Sponsor an Orphan

Just £29.50 a month to help an orphan survive today and build a better tomorrow

Why Sponsor an Orphan?

What do your children mean to you? And how would you feel if you couldn’t be there to love, guide and protect them?

There are an estimated 200 million children worldwide who have experienced the devastating loss of one or both parents. Many of these children already come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

So losing a parent can mean that access to education, the protection of shelter, the sustenance of nutritious meals and the chance for a secure future all become an impossible dream. This is why the responsibility of care for the orphan falls on all of us.

Through the Muslim Hands Sponsorships scheme, you will ensure that your sponsored orphan receives a quality education, emotional support and in locations where they attend our schools, free meals and medical check-up's.

How does it work?

What your £29.50 has to offer displayed as a wheel.

Education and training:

Education is at the heart of our orphan care. It is the key to unlocking lasting and powerful change. Every single one of our children attends school.

Health and welfare:

In select locations, we provide sponsored children with access to regular medical check ups.

Health and nutrition:

In select locations, your sponsorship provides access to regular, healthy and filling school meals to support a child’s growth and development.

What sponsors receive

  • Orphan pack

Your orphan pack will contain a recent photo of your child and information to get to know them.

  • Annual feedback

We'll keep you posted on your sponsored child's performance at school by sharing a written and video feedback report annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will you receive as an orphan sponsor?

Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive an orphan pack, which contains information about the child and a recent picture. Thereafter, you will receive an annual feedback report updating you on the child’s performance at school, as well as a new picture. You can also request an update on how your sponsored orphan is getting on by sending an email to sponsorship@muslimhands.org.uk. Please include your donor ID and orphan ID within the email.

How can I contact my sponsored orphan?

You can contact your sponsored orphan by sending a letter on sponsorship@muslimhands.org.uk including your donor ID and orphan ID.

Our team will review any correspondence received from the donor (both hard copies and electronic copies). If a child wants to send any correspondence, this is sent to us electronically via the field office. But the child is not obliged to write back to the donor.

Can I send my sponsored orphan a gift?

With regards to posting a physical gift, it is possible but rarely does this work out. The postal service in many developing countries is unreliable and thus the likelihood of parcels reaching the orphan can be quite slim, not to mention the cost. We recommend sending monetary gifts which we can transfer to the field staff who will safely pass it on to the orphan.

To send an orphan a cash gift simply call in to our donation line on 0115 9117222.

If you would like to send a larger gift such as a laptop or bicycle, we can help you make the arrangements for that by calling our donation line.

You will need your orphan ID, which can be found on your orphan pack, or you can give us a call on 0115 911 7222 to find out.

Upon receipt of your donation, we will instruct the local orphan care team who will purchase the gift locally and present it to the child.

If you wish to send a gift for a festive occasion such as Eid, please make the donation as early as possible so we can get the gift to the child in good time.

Can I contact the child after he/she turns 18?

At Muslim Hands, we do not share any personal contact details of a sponsored child, even after they turn 18. Direct contact between donors and sponsored children is not permitted. All communication must be facilitated through Muslim Hands to maintain safeguarding standards and protect the wellbeing of both the donor and the young person.

How is my sponsorship money spent?

From the £29.50 a month received through your generous donations, £24 is sent directly to the school the orphan is attending. Where a child is enrolled at a non-Muslim Hands school, the orphan's guardian receives the funds and is entrusted with ensuring the child's needs are met.

This amount helps cover a range of expenses, including school fees, school uniforms for the year, books, stationery, basic health checks, food, and, where possible, transport. The remaining funds are retained at our field offices to support project delivery, as well as future fundraising and marketing efforts.

How long is the orphan sponsorship programme?

The programme ends when a child turns 18. However, support will continue until the end of their academic year to avoid disrupting their education. As a result, some orphans may continue to receive assistance after turning 18.

In certain locations, orphans aged 18 and above may also be eligible to apply for additional support through our 'Scholarship Fund,' which is awarded based on individual needs.

Can I visit my sponsored orphan?

Whenever possible, supervised visits may be arranged with the agreement of the Muslim Hands office, the child, and their guardian. Please note that visits cannot take place at the orphan’s home, in accordance with our Muslim Hands Policy. Meetings are held at the local Muslim Hands office, and for safety reasons, we do not share any personal details, such as the child’s address or telephone number.

You will be responsible for your own travel arrangements, providing an up-to-date DBS certificate, and covering the travel and food costs for the child and their guardian. All arrangements must be made through Muslim Hands, and during your visit, you will be accompanied by a member of staff.

If you would like to visit your child, please contact us at least three months in advance by emailing your request to mail@muslimhands.org.uk or by calling 0115 911 7222. You will need to provide dates on when you intend to visit.

Am I the only donor of my sponsored orphan?

In the vast majority of cases, you are the sole sponsor of your orphan. However, if your sponsored child attends a Muslim Hands School in parts of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Yemen, and other locations, it is possible that there may be two donors sponsoring the same child. This approach helps ensure that your sponsored orphan receives the highest quality education and services available in their area.

What happens if the child I sponsor leaves the programme?

We are committed to transparency and will inform you if the child you sponsor is no longer part of the programme. This may occur if the child reaches a certain age, relocates, if the charity concludes its work in that area, in the unfortunate event of the child’s passing, or for other reasons that may result in their departure from the sponsorship programme.

In such cases, you will usually be given the opportunity to sponsor another child in need or to redirect your support to the Orphan Fund. You will always be kept informed and provided options that reflect your ongoing commitment to making a difference.

Can I ask for extra updates on my sponsored orphan?

Yes, if you would like extra feedback in addition to the annual feedback report, we can provide you with a general update once a year.
