What's happening in Sudan?

Since April 2023, violent conflict in Sudan has triggered the worst displacement crisis in the world. According to the United Nations, over half the population — 33.7 million people in 2026 — now urgently need humanitarian assistance, including food, clean water, shelter and healthcare.

Fighting is still forcing families from their homes, with over 12,400 people displaced from Wad al-Mahi in Blue Nile State since September 2026. In Kordofan, drone strikes continue to kill and injure civilians and disrupt humanitarian aid.

Deaths

At least 150,000 people have reportedly been killed since the conflict began.

Malnutrition

An estimated 4.2 million children are expected to suffer acute malnutrition in 2026.

Health

37% of health facilities across Sudan are no longer functional.

Our work in Sudan

We have been operating in Sudan since 2003. We have carried out a vast range of emergency and long-term projects, including sponsoring Sudanese orphans, building wells, constructing masjids and providing emergency relief during the 2020 floods. A Mother's Fight for Survival

Um Kalthom Hamid Abdalla, 47, once lived a peaceful life with her family in El Fasher, Sudan. But when violence engulfed her neighbourhood, everything changed. Her husband went missing during the siege and never returned, leaving her to care for their children alone. 

As the violence intensified, Um Kalthom fled with her children on a dangerous eight-day journey, including two days on foot. They endured hunger, slept outdoors and travelled through devastated and dangerous neighbourhoods in search of safety. 

Today, the family lives in a single tent at Al-Afad displacement camp, with no source of income and relying on humanitarian assistance for food. Through Muslim Hands' emergency food distribution, Um Kalthom received essential food assistance as part of a distribution supporting 350 displaced families. 

Speaking about the support she received, she said, 'Without your help, we would not have survived. May Allah reward everyone who stood with us.'
