Care for a child in need

On the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “Paradise has a door which is called ‘Happiness’, only those who bring joy to children will pass through it.”’ [Dailami]

Every child deserves a safe, happy childhood and opportunities to help them build a bright future for themselves.

Muslim Hands’ sponsorship programmes provide disadvantaged children with the care and support they need not only to survive, but to thrive, in childhood and beyond. At the heart of our sponsorships is education.

Our orphan sponsors provide schooling, free meals and medical check-ups, our Hifz sponsors give children in poverty the foundation of an Islamic education and those who support our children with disabilities are ensuring that they are provided with the specialised care and support they need to grow and prosper in challenging circumstances.

The Messenger of Allah (saw), himself an orphan, was the embodiment of kindness, compassion and respect towards children. As his Ummah, let us follow his example and support and empower some of the most disadvantaged young people in the world.

Sponsor an Orphan

“Blessed is the wealth of the Muslim, from which he gives to the poor, the orphan and the wayfarer.” (Muslim)

There are an estimated 200 million children worldwide that have experienced the loss of one or both parents. Many of these children will come from already disadvantaged backgrounds.

So losing a parent can mean that access to education, the protection of shelter, the sustenance of nutritious meals and the chance for a secure future all become an impossible dream. This is why the responsibility of care for the orphan falls on all of us.

Who could be more deserving of our help than the child who has no one?

Hifz Student Sponsorship

‘The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it’. (Bukhari)

Like all our education projects, our Hifz sponsorship programme empowers disadvantaged children with the knowledge and skills they need for a brighter future. Learning to read and memorise Qur’an will not only give them a beautiful foundation to learn more about Islam, but also the opportunity to share that knowledge as teachers and Imams in adulthood.

We are currently supporting children in Somalia and Pakistan who would not otherwise be able to study, giving them a safe space in which to learn and qualified teachers to guide them.

Students will begin their studies at the age of nine and the programme will typically take between three and six years to complete, depending on the child’s ability.

Hifz Student Sponsorship

Sponsor a Child with Disabilties

Sponsor a child with disabilities in Pakistan, Somalia or Yemen, helping them and their families to navigate and overcome the obstacles they face now and in the future.

Life for a child with disabilities is even more difficult in countries affected by poverty and conflict, but your sponsorship will ensure that a child receives tailored educational support in a safe, loving environment. Children will also be provided with food and transportation, depending on their circumstances.

In areas, where even basic education and healthcare services are under strain, the needs of children with disabilities can be easily overlooked. Your donations will give them the love and support they need and deserve.

You can choose to sponsor a student attending Somalia's only deaf school, a child receiving free care and support for conditions like cerebral palsy in Yemen or a young person attending a special needs centre in Pakistan.

Q. What will I receive as a sponsor?

A. Throughout your time as a sponsor, we’ll continue to send you regular updates on the progress of your sponsored child.

Q. How long is the Hifz sponsorship programme?

A. Hifz sponsorship is a three to six-year programme, depending on individuals memorising ability. After which, the child will be in a much better position to seek employment or to teach others.

Q. How can I send a gift to my sponsored child?

A. Call our donation line on 0115 911 7222 and tell us that you would like to send a gift to your sponsored child. You will need to provide the childs ID and their country. This information can be found on your sponsorship pack, but if you can’t find the details, a member of our team can help.

Q. Can I visit them myself?

A. Due to safeguarding reasons, we are unable to arrange visits or give out any personal information, including the address or telephone number of your sponsored child.

Q. Can I contact the sponsored child?

A. Yes, you can via a written letter, email or greeting card. You should email a copy of the letter or card as an attachment to sponsorship@muslimhands.org.uk. We will ensure that your correspondence reaches them. However, we cannot always guarantee a reply as we leave the choice to write back with the child.

Q. Can I visit my sponsored child?

A. Supervised visits may be organised after gaining agreement from the Muslim Hands office, the child and their guardian. Visits cannot be made directly to the orphan’s home in line with our safeguarding Policy, so the meeting will be held in the local MH office. For safety purposes, we will not give out any personal information, such as the child’s address or telephone number.

You would be responsible for your own travel arrangements, providing an up-to-date DBS and paying for the child and their guardian’s travel costs and food costs (if they have to travel a long distance). All arrangements will be made through Muslim Hands and on your visit, you will be chaperoned by a member of staff.

If you would like to visit your child, please contact us three months prior to your visit either by emailing your request to mail@muslimhands.org.uk or by calling on 0115 911 7222. You will need to provide dates on when you intend on visiting.

The Impact of Orphan Sponsorship in Pakistan

There are currently over 4.6 million orphaned children living in Pakistan. When a child loses one or both parents, their life is changed forever.

The breadwinner of the household and sometimes the only person earning an income has died and suddenly, their family is struggling even to put food on the table, never mind paying for an education.

Pakistan has one of the highest poverty rates in the world, sitting at 51.7 percent, according to the International Poverty Index. So, when children become orphans, many have to leave school and enter the workforce or stay at home to help care for the household.

Read our report on the impact that your orphan sponsorship will have on a child in Pakistan.
